Step-by-step guide

  1. 01

Open Penwork and enter your text

Go to penwork.tech and type or paste your assignment, notes, or any text in the editor. You can also use the AI generator to create notes on any topic automatically.

  2. 02

    Open the Background Image accordion

In the settings panel on the left, scroll down to find the '🖼 Background Image' section. Click to expand it. You will see a 'Choose Image' button and, once an image is uploaded, controls for opacity and scale.

  3. 03

    Upload your background image

Click '📁 Choose Image' and select any JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF from your device. The image is processed entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server. The live preview updates instantly to show the background behind your handwriting.

  4. 04

Adjust opacity with the Opacity slider

Use the Opacity slider (1–100%) to control how transparent the background is. A setting of 10–25% is recommended for most assignments because it lets the handwriting remain clearly readable. Higher opacity values make the background more prominent, which works well for decorative or watermark-style images.

  5. 05

Adjust the scale with the Scale slider

The Scale slider (10–200%) controls how large the background image is relative to the page. At 100% the image is sized to cover the full page. Use 'Fit to Page' to instantly snap the scale to 100% and centre the image. You can increase scale beyond 100% to zoom in and crop the image, or decrease it to see the full image with some whitespace.

  6. 06

    Reset or remove the background

Click '↩ Reset' to restore the default opacity (15%) and scale (100%) while keeping your image. Click '✕ Remove' to clear the background entirely. Changes always update the live preview in real time so you can fine-tune before downloading.

  7. 07

    Download as PDF

Once the background looks right in the live preview, click the 'Generate' button to render all pages, then 'Download PDF'. Every page of the PDF will include the background at the opacity and scale you set.

Pro tips for background images

🌿

Use a lightly textured paper scan at 15–20% opacity for an ultra-realistic handwritten effect.

🎓

Add your college or school logo as a watermark by setting opacity to 8–12%.

📐

Grid or dot-grid images at 20% opacity can add subtle structure to plain-style pages.

🖼️

Set opacity to 80–100% for decorative cover pages where the background is the main visual element.

Frequently asked questions

Does the background image get uploaded to a server?
No. Penwork processes everything in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device.
What image formats are supported for backgrounds?
Any format your browser can display — JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and SVG. For best quality use PNG or JPG.
Will the background appear on every page of the PDF?
Yes. The background image is applied to every page at the same opacity and scale.
Can I use a different background on each page?
Currently Penwork applies a single background to all pages. For different backgrounds per page, generate separate PDFs and merge them.
The background is too dark — how do I fix it?
Lower the Opacity slider. A value of 10–20% usually works well. You can also try a lighter or more muted source image.
Can I use a background image together with a paper colour?
Yes. The background image is drawn on top of the paper colour, so you can combine both for a layered effect.
